5 Ways to Test-Drive a Neighborhood While Sheltering in Place

For the last few months, almost everyone has been following strict stay-at-home orders provided by our state and local governments. In many ways, this new lifestyle has put a pause on daily activities and goals that were such an integral part of our lives. However, just because life has slowed down a bit doesn’t mean it has come to a complete stop. The world is still spinning and we’re all making adjustments such as streaming movies instead of watching them at a theater or ordering meal kits from our favorite restaurants instead of dining in. Every industry has seen a shift and real estate is no exception.

Even though the current social climate seems unstable, homes are still being bought and sold. One can still research a home and the surrounding neighborhood while sheltering in place. Below are five ways to test-drive a neighborhood of interest without leaving your couch.

1. Take a Virtual Walk with Google

Stroll around your potential new neighborhood using Google Street View. Simply plug in the address of the house that caught your eye into Google and the Street View will allow you to click and drag your way down the street as if you were physically walking the location.

2. Browse Websites (including social media) for Information

Gathering details of the proposed neighborhood is easier than ever thanks to sites like Yelp and AreaVibes. Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter often have groups formed by local residents detailing consistent complaints or celebrating the ongoing work of their HOA. Never underestimate the power of a review either. Look up local restaurants, cafes, and schools to get a feel of the culture from real patrons.

3. Search Through Other Real Estate Listings

Learn about the homes for sale within the neighborhood by browsing through other listings. The homes don’t necessarily have to be on your list to purchase, but you can learn a lot about the style and ages of homes from a listing. Keep in mind, the future occupants of these homes could be your neighbors.

4. Investigate Crime Rates

Safety has always been, and will always be, a priority for buyers as well as sellers. Taking a peek into current crime rates provides a picture of how dangerous or, hopefully, how safe the neighborhood is.

5. Connect with a Haystack Real Estate Agent

When it comes to real estate, it’s always a good idea to connect with an experienced real estate agent. In doing so, your agent can help with the virtual tour of a home plus provide a virtual tour of the neighborhood itself. Having the perspective of an agent is invaluable when it comes to buying a home within your dream neighborhood.
